Instructional Design
Our instructional design team assists faculty and departments in applying pedagogically sound principles of instruction and best practices to the design and creation of effective online and blended/hybrid courses.
The team also recommends instructional strategies that promote active learning and facilitate greater interaction and engagement between instructors and students and among students themselves.
Services span the following areas:
Technical Services
Our instructional designers and distance learning specialists conduct research and review emerging technologies to determine which systems should be adopted and implemented to support existing programs. We provide a wide range of technical services that include the following:
- Web development
- Interactive video classrooms and class sessions
- Digital imaging, graphic design, media and production
- Departmental access to our streaming media
- Online collaboration tools (e.g. blogs, wikis)
- Copyright clearance and approval for courses
- Technical assistance for off-campus, site-based, and online students
Faculty Training
Our instructional design team
- assists with content conversion and course redesign, including setting up course sections in learning management systems such as Illinois Compass and Moodle;
- guides faculty and departments in understanding the capabilities of different delivery systems and how they can help address the specific instructional needs of the department or program;
- provides training and documentation on how to use learning management system tools and synchronous Web-conferencing delivery systems in specific courses and course contexts; and
- offers ongoing instructional support and a faculty resources website for online and distance learning essentials.
